UNAM – San Antonio offers English courses on an intensive format, 5 days a week for 7 weeks (3 weeks during the summer II session). Students practice skills related to speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and idioms. Nine levels are offered from basic to advance. These courses are equivalent to 10.6 CEU’s (Continuing Education Units).
UNAM – San Antonio offers English courses on a quarterly basis, on an evening scheduled. Courses meet three times per week for 10 weeks. Students practice English language skills related to speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Eight levels of instruction are offered from basic to advanced levels. These courses are equivalent to 7.5 CEU’s.
Intensive Program or Quarter Program students who complete Level 6 or Level 8 with a grade of at least 85% in each of their courses will receive a certificate from UNAM – San Antonio that verifies either the students’ intermediate or advanced knowledge of English respectively.
Basic, Beginner, Intermediate, & Advanced
These courses are focused on the development of the student’s spoken English ability. Four different levels (basic, beginner, intermediate & advanced) are offered throughout the year and consist of 21 hours of instruction, according to the student’s knowledge of English. No credits are offered.
This course consists of 21 hours of instruction. Pronunciation courses include practice in distinguishing and reproducing difficult sounds through the use of exercises for listening comprehension, speaking and vocabulary development. These courses are equivalent to 2.1 CEU’s.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Level 4 or possess equivalent knowledge.
This advanced course is designed to prepare the student for the international standard of the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language)*. The focus is on the TOEFL iBT version which includes the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both independent and integrated formats. This course emphasizes fluency in English so that a student can reach the highest score possible on this test and consists of 50 hours of instruction. Thirty hours of instruction are offered in the summer II session. These courses are equivalent to 5 CEU’s.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Level 6 or possess equivalent knowledge.
Academic Preparation Program
Students with the intention of attending a university in the USA for their Associate’s Degree, or Master’s Degree need to prepare for and successfully complete the TOEFL test with an adequate score to enter the university of their choice. In addition, students will need to be introduced to academic writing, reading, listening, and speaking strategies that are the most prevalent in American universities. This program consist of a total of eight courses with four courses offered each seven weeks (three weeks during the summer II session).
: Permission of the English Department Chair is required to be admitted to this program. Students must have Level 6 or higher.
