AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM

This ESL program is designed for advanced English language learners looking to practice and improve production and comprehension of the language. Students also learn more about the English language skills needed in the business environment, as well as American Film, Culture & History and Literature. Discussion and critical thinking are large components of each class.

Although some focus more on others, each class targets all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

The courses in the American Studies program include:

  • American Film and Conversation
  • American Literature
  • American Culture and History
  • Business English

Business English (Part A & B): Doing business globally is becoming more widespread than ever before.  For many ESL learners, finding the opportunity to practice and produce the language skills necessary in different business contexts can be challenging. This class focuses on language used in different areas of business, common topics in business and global communication that is essential for those wishing to build good relationships and networking in an English-speaking environment.

Prerequisite: Students must have completed Level 7 or possess equivalent knowledge.

Permission of the English Department Chair is required to be admitted to this program.

Note: Students with F-1 visas must register for all four courses to maintain legal status in the US. Non-visa holders may register for one or more classes.
